Light Chasers

Cloud Cult

For those who know me well, you know I really enjoy listening to a band called, Cloud Cult. I stumbled onto them in the fall of 2007 as I road tripped back from Alaska. They are simply amazing. Founder, Craig Minowa, and his wife suffered the death of their 2 year old son in 2004 (i believe) and the band became a medium for them to deal with their grief. Now, that is just basic backstory and does not define all of their music, but to discuss the band, that point must be noted. They record and release all of their music under their own label, Earthology Records. Early on, they determined they could not find a record label that would give them complete freedom and control over their music, or a label that would conduct itself in an environmentally stable way. So Earthology was formed and the rest is blisstory. I don't intend to give you their full bio, but needed to give you a little taste before I tell about their new album. To listen to them and learn more about them check out the website.

But now to get down to business. They have put out a new album called, Light Chasers. Their previous albums are all phenomenal, they all hint at death, and love, and searching for answers. They are inspiring and thought provoking. Light Chasers has taken everything they have built on for years and has not disappointed . They have added more instrumentation. More horns and more complex strings. Very digitized percussion. But the overall theme has moved me not a little. Such an inspiration. With an opening track ending in, "Activate your Force-Field and just keep going". And the final track tying back into the first.

If you are into music that is truly independent of dominating major labels and ideals, and aren't afraid to really give a listen to something that is quite unique in our very monotoned pop culture environment, then I encourage you to listen to this band, and not casually. If you need a break from the musical funk that is out there now and have the patience to become familiar with Cloud Cult's lyrics and style, you will not be disappointed. You will be inspired.
